Overlooking the lake is the Lake Dillon Amphitheatre, the
venue for summer local theater, family programs and the ever popular free
Saturday evening "Sunset at the Summit" concert series. Between the Marina
and the Amphitheatre is the Marina Park, which is home to the Friday Farmers
Market. The Market is an open-air market featuring fresh grown produce,
homemade baked goods, flowers, and specialty foods. The Market runs mid-June
through the end of September. Throughout the town of Dillon
and along the miles of shore-side bike paths are the public parks and the
smaller pocket parks, which provide the perfect resting spot to take in the
views.
In the wintertime, Dillon's quaint and cozy atmosphere is a
great alternative from the larger resorts for lodging, shopping and dining.
Dillon is centrally located along the free bus routes and less than 20 minutes
from any of the county's ski areas. If you are looking for alternate outdoor
activities, there are intermediate snowshoe and cross country skiing
opportunities at the Dillon Nature Preserve, which also offers some of the most
spectacular views within Summit County.
Another great option is Dillon's self-guided historic walking tour around
downtown Dillon that focuses on the buildings and homes moved from the town's
original site prior to the completion of the dam.

DILLON - Crystal Taylor felt the urge to share her religion on a global level; she recently Googled "year-long mission trip" and found an opportunity to visit 11 countries in 11 months. Taylor, 24, moved to Dillon from Allen, Texas last October to learn how to snowboard. "Once I kind of got up here and saw that not everywhere is a conservative bubble world like back home, I saw that ... God is calling me to a bigger goal," she said. The trip she's planning with The World Race - a Christian missions organization - involves stops in such countries as Ireland, Cambodia, Kenya, Israel and Thailand. Taylor said she will pray for guidance to a couple of yet-to-be-determined locations in Asia and Africa. "Personally, I feel called to Ethiopia," she said. About 50 to 60 people are to be traveling through the organization at the same time, and they're divided into groups of five to eight. "Living as locals do in

DILLON - Barbara Davis's second term as Dillon's mayor is done in April, and two councilmen have thrown their hats in the ring for the seat. Don Parsons and Ron Holland have both officially announced their intent to run for mayor. Election day is April 6. Both men are already ensconced in town politics - Parsons has put in four years on Dillon's council and two years on its planning commission; Holland has spent two years on the council as well.
A brief look at Parsons and Holland Parsons, a retired general surgeon, said he thinks Dillon is a town that "could and should be involved in the larger community of Summit County." He also said the town is working on improving its infrastructure and defining a clear vision for its future. "I want to run for mayor because I want to be a part of that," Parsons said. Holland, a local businessman, said he's running for mayor because "there's just so many exciting thin

FRISCO - The Town of Frisco is close to sealing the deal on a host of new ways to play, including a terrain park, tubing hill, bike park, skating rink and 4,000-square-foot day lodge. The Frisco Planning Commission voted unanimously Thursday night to approve the package of recreational amenities, to be located at the Frisco Peninsula Recreation Area, at the southeast end of town. The plan will go before the Frisco Town Council for final approval on Feb. 23. The Frisco Peninsula is an 807-acre finger of land stretching out into Dillon Reservoir. The town owns 220 of those acres, upon which the Frisco Nordic Center now sits. The area is also home to a disc golf course, playing fields, sledding hill and horse-drawn sleigh operation. The proposed tubing hill will have a lift system, such as a magic carpet, to transport riders up a hill. At the top of the hill, guests will have a choice of five chutes to whiz down, each about 1,000 feet long. Philip Sanderman, who lives near the P

DILLON - Security specialist Jeremy DuFour expected a quiet night while guarding the Frisco side of the Dillon Dam Road on Jan. 18. "Sundays are usually the deadest day," said DuFour, who works for Specialized Protective Service, a company contracted by Denver Water to guard the Dillon Dam Road. But DeFour's night turned out to be anything but quiet. AT about 12:20 a.m., a young man driving a stolen vehicle smashed through the barricade on the Dam Road from Frisco. He then crashed the car and tried to escape, but injured himself when he rolled down a steep embankment. DeFour, along with Dillon police officer Joe Staufer, revived and stabilized the man. DuFour and Staufer were honored by Dillon's chief of police Joe Wray at Tuesday's town council meeting for putting themselves in danger to save another in freezing temperatures. Both men were given the Dillon Police Department Life Saving Award. Summit County's undersheriff Derek Woodman sa

DILLON - Dillon's officials extended its moratorium on medical marijuana dispensaries at Tuesday's town meeting until the end of 2010. The extension goes into effect immediately. It would have expired on Feb. 13 if the town hadn't taken any action. Staff and council members say they want to have more time to see how the state will approach regulations before they make any decisions.
